The High Court has held that the words "any administrative, regulatory, judicial or quasi-judicial proceedings" in an indemnity provided by an employer to a former employee in a compromise agreement did not cover investigations by the police into alleged criminal behaviour by the employee. While judicial proceedings may not exclude criminal proceedings, it could not have been intended that personal wrongdoing by an employee could be covered by this indemnity. Since the words used in the indemnity are standard, their interpretation by the court will be welcomed by many employers. (Coulson v Newsgroup Newspapers Ltd [2011] EWHC 3482 (QB).)
