Buying your own home is a dream that people work very hard to achieve but often just the first step of trying to put a deposit together can be a real challenge.

Right to Buy 

If you are a council tenant you might be entitled to purchase your flat or house under the Right to Buy scheme.

The amount of discount you get will vary on how long you have been a council tenant. You could get anywhere between 35% and 70% discount on the market value of your home.



Re-selling Right to Buy properties

You should keep in mind that when you come to sell your Right to Buy property there will be certain restrictions. If you dispose of the property within 10 years of purchasing it you will need to offer it back to your original landlord or to another public body landlord.

If you dispose of your property within 5 years then you will be required to repay a relevant proportion of the discount. You should also keep in mind that the amount you have to repay is a percentage rather than a fixed sum and this means that if the property value has increased then the amount you have to repay will also go up.
